Sebastián Álvarez (Ciudad de México) presenta una serie de pinturas realizadas tras su regreso a México después de más de una década viviendo y trabajando en Londres, Reino Unido. Más que un retorno, su práctica se sitúa en un estado de desplazamiento: una forma de habitar lo propio como si fuera ajeno.
El título de la exposición se basa en el poema Elegía del Retorno (Luis G Urbina), del cual retoma una ambigüedad persistente: volver como extraño, y extrañar aquello que alguna vez fue propio.
Las imágenes emergen desde un territorio inestable, cercano al sueño. No describen un lugar específico, sino una condición: la del pensamiento que se desplaza, que insiste, que reaparece. El subconsciente no reconoce geografías; se manifiesta con la misma intensidad en cualquier sitio.
En ese espacio, lo familiar y lo extraño dejan de oponerse. Se confunden, se repiten, se transforman. Las obras no buscan fijar un sentido, sino permanecer en ese umbral donde algo se reconoce —y al mismo tiempo, se desconoce.
Sebastián Álvarez (Mexico City) presents a series of paintings developed after returning to Mexico following more than a decade living and working in London, UK. Rather than a homecoming, his work inhabits a state of displacement: a way of moving through the familiar as if it were foreign.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by the poem Elegía del Retorno (Luis G Urbina), from which it draws a persistent ambiguity: to return as a stranger, and to long for what once felt one’s own.
The images emerge from an unstable territory, close to dreaming. They do not describe a specific place, but a condition — that of a mind in motion, insistent, recurring. The subconscious does not recognize geography; it manifests with the same intensity wherever one may be.
Within this space, the familiar and the strange cease to oppose one another. They blur, repeat, and transform. The works do not seek resolution, but remain in that threshold where something is both recognized and unknown.
